"Soul Variations" is AM's sophomore full-length album. Recorded live to 2" tape, the album shows AM's foray into the groovier style he would be known for on later records such as "Future Sons & Daughters" and most recently his collaboration with Shawn Lee on ESL Records ("Celestial Electric"). The Washington Post described Soul Variations as "a stylistic shift animated by R&B grooves and Brazilian lilts, featuring standout songs that are personal and eminently melodic". Many of the songs were featured in movie and TV shows including the song "We Will Remain" which was featured on the hit television show "Friday Night Lights" and was subsequently added to the soundtrack release.
