Frankie Cosmos' lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Greta Kline is one of indie music's most deft and most necessary writers. Different Talking, the project's sixth album, finds Kline's lyrics softening slightly, the wry cynicism of past records giving way to an acknowledgment of the fallibility of the human brain and heart. Musically, it's the most varied and richly textured Frankie Cosmos album, filled with country-fried noodling, tassels of synth, and imposing walls of sound.
