Herndon, Holly
Following the extensive sonic explorations of her debut LP 'Movement', Holly Herndon drops this mesmerising single with an even richer approach to arranging, re-arranging and orchestrating the human voice and surprising percussive elements. It has a similar hi-tech abstract aesthetic to other New Yorkers Oneohtrix Point Never, Laurel Halo and Arca, but reaches a new level of detail and engineering. 'Chorus' is a cubist groove patchworked together piece by syncopated piece, both teeming with intriguing objects and coming together as a gestalt. 'Solo Voice,' just as absorbing, is a more minimal, gradual investigation into vocal timbres and free rhythms, clusters of sample-synthesised voices flashing in and out of the auditory field. A fascinating diptych.
