John Cougar Mellencamp is an American singersongwriter and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee whose career has spanned more than five decades. Emerging in the late 1970s under the name Johnny Cougar, he rose to international fame in the 1980s with a string of hit albums and singles that blended heartland rock, folk, and roots music with stories of everyday American life.
