ITALIAN PUNK FUSED WITH JAPANESE HARDCORE Raw Power was formed in 1981 by two brothers from Poviglio, Italy-Mauro Codeluppi on vocals, and Giuseppe Codeluppi on guitar. Land of the Rising Spaghetti commemorates the band's 40th anniversary and their tour of Japan (which took place before the COVID-19 pandemic). The lineup for Raw Power's side of the record includes Mauro on vocals, Marco Massarenti on bass, Paolo on guitars, and Mattia "Berta" Bertani on drums. Giuseppe is there also, in spirit; sadly, he left the planet on October 6th, 2002, after slightly over a quarter of a century with Raw Power. His guitar can still be heard screaming from the gutters, however, and his memory is the driving force behind his brother's desire to keep the band functioning until Mauro, too, passes on. Executive producer David Ulysses Portnow worked at the Gorilla Gardens all-ages club in Seattle until its closure, and it was there, in 1986, that he first saw Raw Power. "Funny thing about that night, the opening band was Guns N' Roses", he recalls. In 1987, Raw Power returned to the United States, headlining a massive North American tour, with the Dayglo Abortions and The Dehumanizers in tow. Raw Power also have performed with the Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, Adolescents, D.O.A., Agnostic Front, Suicidal Tendencies, and Motörhead-the list of heavy hitters goes on and on, and includes Japan's female-fronted Ananas, who opened for Raw Power on their recent tour of Ananas's home country. Ananas hail from Kyoto. Front woman Karina Friday is supported by Junichi on guitars, Awaji on bass and Kazu on drums. PIG Records is trying to emphasize the importance of women in rock, and, in seeking more female punk representation, found Ananas. Mauro gave his full support to splitting a record with the Japanese band, and describes Karina as the modern-day version of Mr. Chi Pig from SNFU (may his soul rest in peace as well).
