No Te Muevas
RIP - Don't Move One of the most powerful and honest albums of Spanish punk. At the height of the so-called Basque Radical Rock era, the Mondragón band RIP dropped a raw and noisy bombshell that still resonates with rage today: Don't Move. This album, released in 1987, is more than a handful of songs; it's a desperate cry from the streets, a grimy and direct snapshot of a youth fed up with the system, the police, and repression. From the first second, the album crushes you with a fast, dirty, and unadorned sound. The bass rumbles as if recorded in a cave, the guitar slashes without technique but with fury, and Karlos's voice spits out each line with genuine disdain, without posing. RIP didn't want to be liked. RIP wanted to kick you in the face. The lyrics are a reflection of their context: a Basque Country under surveillance, beaten down, and politicized. Songs like "Brigada Criminal" and "Odio mi patria" are open declarations of war. "Enamorado de la muerte" is pure suburban nihilism. There's no room for metaphors or poetry: RIP goes straight for the throat. The album's production is minimal, almost nonexistent, and that works in its favor. No Te Muevas sounds like a well-honed demo, with that annoying echo only found in garage rehearsals and bars where people played surrounded by beer, sweat, and blood. This album not only influenced dozens of Basque punk bands, it also marked a turning point in the national scene. Its rawness, its message, and its attitude remain relevant. RIP didn't invent punk, but they understood it like few others on the peninsula. Forty years later, No Te Muevas remains a punch to the chest.
