Simian Life
Hermetic Tonal Briefing
Emerging from the creative nucleus of Los Angeles psych veterans Andy and Robert Campanella, comes Simian Life's
full-length debut, Hermetic Tonal Briefing (Atom Records). This studio project draws deep from the wellsprings of
classic songwriting, channeling the introspective beauty of UK folk rocker Roy Harper just as readily as the driving,
edgier psych of The Move ("Another Way Down"). The result is a captivating blend where instrumental and vocal textures
intertwine, crafting an atmosphere ripe for both inner reflection and sonic exploration.
At the heart of Simian Life is Andy Campanella, a seasoned drummer for LA indie stalwarts like Stevenson Ranch Davidians
and The Black Watch, stepping confidently into the spotlight as the principal songwriter and arranger. His years spent
honing rhythms in the background as a producer and engineer have clearly informed a nuanced approach to crafting songs
that are both trippy and undeniably pretty. Adding to this rich pedigree is his brother Rob, a cornerstone of The Brian
Jonestown Massacre and the driving force behind The Quarter After. Rob's invaluable experience behind the board, honed
in his own Hollywood Hills studio (where he's helmed records for the likes of The Warlocks and The Tyde), provides the
perfect sonic canvas for Simian Life's sonic investigations.
Early glimpses into Hermetic Tonal Briefing evoke a fascinating tapestry of influences. Hints of Roy Harper's
experimental edge ("May Grey") and Procol Harum's distinct grandeur peek through ("Colors All Around"), while at other
moments, the listener might find themselves adrift in a sonic sea reminiscent of Michael Chapman (title track) with a
dash of The Moody Blues ("Colour", "Indescribable Dream") . Yet, crucially, Simian Life transcends mere imitation,
forging a sound that possesses a captivatingly familiar unfamiliarity - a dreamlike state that feels both known and
utterly new, perhaps the perfect summation of their work in TBW and BJM thus far.
Dispelling any notions of sibling rivalry, Andy emphasizes the harmonious creative process with Rob, highlighting their
deep-rooted musical connection. This familial bond extends beyond the core duo, permeating the very fabric of the album.
Backing vocals are provided by brother Dominic Campanella, cousin Christina Campanella, and their mother Jill Campanella
along with a host of other players. One particularly heartwarming track even features the voices of Andy's daughters,
Gia and Cora, the latter credited as a co-writer on "Wonderman". Even the album's cover art is a contribution from
another brother, Johnny Campanella, underscoring the deeply personal and collaborative nature of this project.
And what better way to celebrate this familial spirit than through a pair of mesmerizing psychedelic tracks that feel
both mind-bending and blissfully serene? These songs ("Wonderman" and the record's title track) effortlessly transport
the listener to that intriguing space between familiarity and the unknown, hinting at the sonic adventures that lie
ahead in Simian Life's burgeoning musical journey. These initial offerings are a tantalizing taste of a sound that feels
both of the moment and wonderfully timeless.
