Slug Christ
Saint Charles
Chaz Bell, known as the artist Slug Christ, has been hailed as one of the most prolific, versatile, and influential
underground artists in modern independent music. As an Atlanta, Georgia native, Bell was originally known as the
vocalist for legendary Atlanta mathgrind band An Isle Ate Her. In the wake of the band's dissolution, he began to
venture out into solo projects, including beat production, eventually adopting the Slug Christ persona. It wasn't long
after that that he became one of the original and most recognized members of the Atlanta hip-hop collective Awful
Records (among the likes of Abra, Father, Playboi Carti, Tommy Genesis, & others). The above mentioned, and having
worked with the likes of Playboi Carti, Father, $uicideboy$, and Lil Peep, his body of work speaks for itself, spanning
years.
Relocating to Los Angeles, California, his artistic endeavors in recent years have expanded to visual arts, books, and
more. A student of the prestigious Atlanta art school the Savannah College of Art and Design, Slug has released a
variety of drawings and paintings in print form, even a hardcover pseudo-graphic novel titled "Encyclopaedia
Supermundanae", telling a tale of an alternate sci-fi nuanced reality with extensive artwork and storyline. Having
appeared in the Lil-Peep documentary film "Everybody's Everything", and his notorious rant in the opening of the Machine
Gun Kelly film "Life in Pink", his music output remained strong and uninterrupted by other artistic endeavors.
"Saint Charles", his 20th full length release and his 11th release on Blackhouse Records Ltd., descends into a versatile
and eclectic direction as he did with his most recent "Plant Mentality" series releases. This time however, he revisits
his roots, bringing back the sound of his early works as to not alienate his core fan base. With a nod to the old DJ
Screw chopped-and-screwed scene, as well as his early days with the Awful Records crew, "Saint Charles" is a paramount
album for Slug Christ. The lyrical content remains heavily personal, navigating the subjects of life, death, religion,
depression, addiction, and the overall void resulting from not feeling anything and the feelings of alienation. Surely a
consistent tone, the album still carries a variety that almost any listener can relate to.
