Villena, Beto W/we All Together
Suavecito
"Suavecito" has been called "The Chicano National Anthem." It was originally recorded by Santana-related band Malo in
1972 and reached the Billboard's Top 20. This Peruvian version, released on Discos MAG that same year, features Beto
Villena and We All Together (WAT's Carlos Guerrero on lead vocals). Villena was one of the most accomplished trumpet
players in Peru with a successful career in the Latin soul and tropical scenes while We All Together were one of the
epoch-making groups in the history of Peruvian rock. A perfect blend of talents delivering a true-to-original rendition
of the vocal-harmonies wonder that is "Suavecito." A sophisticated sweet soul "rola" for those into the lowrider sounds.
On the flip we find Black Sugar, Peruvian pioneers in mixing funk influences with rock and Latin rhythms. "Viajecito" is
one of the strongest tracks of their debut album, starting off with a psychedelic guitar-driven intro then throwing
layers of infectious percussion and piano. The track gets a turn once the horns and vocal section start, resulting an
amazing jazzy Latin soul dancer.
