ZATH (pron. ZOTH) is made of three men; Zack Weil, Seth Sher and Dan Browning, all of whom have an existence outside of the howling maw of rage/despair that is ZATH. In fact, they're all pretty busy musicians in other Chicago bands. Guitarist and singer Zack plays in Oozing Wound and was previously in Cacaw; drummer Seth makes music as SYNE and Psychic Steel and also played in Coughs and Ga'an; bassist Dan works hard in CAVE as well. ZATH's songs are a bottomless well of incalculable feeling, rendered with thrusting ability and immaculate precision. The writing process involves extensive use of ZATH's riff log, compiled for years leading back into the mists of time. Drummer Sher and guitarist Weil work through the progressions, which, through trial and error and the introduction of additional architecture, are tortuously rebuilt into the finished songs. The goals of the songs include: movement through the construction of the piece circumventing descent into the chasm of verse-chorus-verse tedium, NO SOLOS and an attempt to ward off typical thrash tropes (though a heavy debt is owed to German thrash bands (like Destruction, Sodom, Kreator and Exumer), 70's prog (Magma, Yes), minimalist composition (Steve Reich et al), early American Death Metal, and 70's proto metal (Judas Priest, Budgie, etc) to name but a few) with fresh thinking. Done, done and done!
